Pulp & Paper-Paper making

 

 

Caustic soda fulfills a specific role in the whitening of paper pulp: it activates the action of the hydrogen peroxide as in the following reaction:

                   H2O2 + OH-  ®  OOH- + H2

The perhydroxyl ion formed by this reaction is a mild oxidiser, which allows effective whitening of the paper pulp without any degradation whatsoever of the paper’s fibres.

 

The table below shows the influence of the level of caustic soda on the whiteness of paper pulp.
